When you budget for a new dirt bike make sure you factor insurance into it. After buying your safety gear this is the second smartest thing you can do. They won’t cover you for mechanical warranty as dirt bikes are high performance motorcycles but they will cover you for theft, and damage incurred during transportation.
The reality is there are many scum bags out there that wouldn’t think twice about stealing your bike if given the opportunity – and it can happen anywhere, anytime! I know of people who have had their bikes stolen from the back of their ute while they were in the pub after a ride.
In the past there weren’t so many insurance companies prepared to insure dirt bikes, but there are plenty around now which has made it easier and cheaper for your average person to get cover . And for just a few dollars each month you can have peace of mind knowing that you can have your pride and joy replaced if the worst happens.
When choosing a dirt bike insurance provider make sure they cover these two things:
Theft – Including theft from your trailer or transportation utility
Fire & Damage (It won’t include wear-and-tear) – Including during transportation
Also be sure to read the fine print paying attention to any clauses and conditions including the excess on claims. Most insurance companies will ask you to disclose how your bike will be secured at home, for example if it is stored in a garage and if the garage is alarmed. They usually offer discounts if you have a certified security lock and chain as well so it’s worthwhile getting one of those. Some insurance companies also offer discounts for multiple bikes so if you have a family of riders look for one of these providers.
Once you have your bike covered it’s a great idea to brush up on your ‘security smarts’ and learn how to make it as difficult as possible for thieves to steal your bike. There are a number of simple things you can do to achieve this that will cost you little or nothing to do.
If you are sitting on the fence about whether or not you should be bothered paying for insurance, think about this.. Motorcycles get stolen all the time and will continue to get stolen in the future, it’s just a matter of who’s and when? If yours gets pinched or ends up in an accident while transporting it, I guarantee you will wish you had insured it.
